The Idiot Index Is Brilliant. Following It Blindly Makes You the Idiot.
Elon Musk’s Idiot Index compares a finished product’s cost to its raw materials. A high ratio means you’re overpaying for process.
He used it to build a $5,000 actuator that a supplier quoted at $120,000. He replaced $1,500 NASA latches with $30 bathroom stall hardware.
The framework is one of the sharpest in business!
It also breaks in predictable places.
It can’t price a surgeon’s 15 years of training. It can’t tell the difference between Nike’s brand premium and a defense contractor’s margin padding. It assumes every cost gap is waste. Some gaps keep people alive.
SpaceX’s own Crew Dragon proves it. When Musk needed to fly humans to the ISS, he didn’t use bathroom stall latches. He submitted to years of NASA testing, 700+ engine tests, and 27 parachute drops before a single astronaut boarded.
Even Elon Musk knows when the Idiot Index doesn’t apply.
I wrote a full breakdown of where the index works and where it fails.
