In May, two men broke into cars in the garage at Columbia Crest, an apartment community in Atlanta, and ran. A robot dog tracked one of them to the trash compactor and led police to him. Both were arrested.
The robot belongs to Undaunted, an Atlanta startup with robots on dozens of properties. At 445 Cleveland, a 200-unit complex, two of them replaced the two or three guards who covered nights and weekends. A person at a remote station drives each robot, talks through its speaker, and calls police. List price is $3,333 a month for two robots and 8 hours of live monitoring a night. Undaunted says that's about half what guards cost.
It doesn't take smoke breaks. It does take charging breaks.
I like it, and I'd try it. It also has limits. It can't knock on 3B at 1 a.m. about the music. It has no thumbs, so it can't lock the gate. And when five guys are yelling in the parking lot, I don't know if they'll take orders from a speaker on legs.
My officers hand me a report every shift: each checkpoint, the time, and what happened. Before I'd trade them for a robot, I'd want the robot's version of that report, plus answers to four questions.

A person on a screen somewhere else. How many other properties are they watching at the same time, and how fast do they call 911?

The CEO told Reuters that residential burglaries at 445 Cleveland fell 100%. Reuters couldn't verify it. Show me a year of police call data, before and after. And how often does the camera AI send the robot after a cat?

The battery reportedly lasts about two and a half hours. Unitree, which builds the robots, rates its stock model to 95ยฐF, and Atlanta gets there. In July the FCC blocked approval of new foreign-made robot dog models. Undaunted has about 16 people. Where do the replacements come from?

If somebody in a mask takes a bat to the robot, or the robot trips a kid, who pays? Undaunted's terms cap its liability at 12 months of fees, about $40,000. My lawyer and my insurance carrier would read that contract before I sign it. If someone gets hurt on the property, a plaintiff's lawyer will ask why I swapped my guards for a dog with no thumbs.
For a junkyard, an industrial yard, or a construction site, it already looks like a fit. For apartments, I want those four answers first.
Would you put one on your property?
